Makoto Itou is a young Japanese high school student beginning his second term at the fictional Sakakino Academy. During his daily train rides to and from school, he becomes infatuated with fellow student Kotonoha Katsura; a girl that also commutes. When a new classmate acquaintance of his, Sekai Saionji, discovers his secret crush on Kotonoha, she helps introduce both of them to each other and over time they grow closer and agree to date.
The following afternoon on her way home at the nearby train station in front of the school, Sekai finds Makoto waiting for Kotonoha to rendezvous for a date. He sits with her and reiterates his appreciation for her help, and feeling heavily indebted, offers repayment anyway he can. Though she believes he is overreacting, Sekai decides to redeem her obligation by placing a kiss on his lips as her train pulls in; quickly rushing into an open passenger car and happily bidding him good luck on his date with Kotonoha.
Makoto takes Kotonoha on a first date that ends badly when he tries to kiss her. Sekai finds out and advices Makoto and gives him movie tickets to take Kotonoha out. Things go badly during the movie and Sekai insists it's because Makoto wants to move too fast and tells him to apologize to Kotonoha. Kotonoha tries to avoid seeing Makoto but Sekai finds her and convice her Makoto's intentions are good. Kotonoha then goes over to Makoto and finally kisses him while Sekai watches on from a distance. Then ext day Kotonoha invites Makoto over to her home to meet her little sister Kokoro. Makoto accepts and spend a day at Kotonoha's playing with Kokoro and Kotonoha asks Makoto to get on first name terms with each other. Makoto gets back at home and calls Sekai, then tells her dating Kotonoha is tiring.
The next afternoon Makoto and Kotonoha are making out on the rooftop but Kotonoha makes him stop after he tries to grope her breasts. Makoto calls Sekai for advice during the night and she tells him it's because he's still moving too fast. Sekai then gets Makoto to admit he wants the relationship to become sexual and then she offers to teach him about intimacy that involves her taking him to the roof where she allows him to fondle and strip her. Later while going home Makoto runs into Kotonoha who invites him to a pool.Makoto and Kotonoha go the pool with their friends Sekai, Setsuna, Hikari and Taisuke. Despite Kotonoha being more affectionate towards Makoto his mood doesn't improve. While leaving the pool Sekai pulls Makoto aside and tells him they're no longer friends. Makoto thinks about her words carefully and then rushes back to see Sekai. Sekai returns to the tration to meet him and ultimately reciprocates Makoto's feeling. Later that night they go to Sekai's aparatment and have sex.
Makoto and Sekai begin to see each other but Sekai, feeling remorse urges Makoto to reveal their relationship to Kotonoha. On a train Kotonoha catches a sight of Makoto and Sekai kissing but she thinks it was her imagination. With the preperations for the school festival taking up her free time Kotonoha texts Makoto to tell him they can't have their usual lunch break but Kotonoha unexpectedly is let out and rushes to see Makoto on the roof but hears Sekai confessing her love to Makoto.
Setsuna, now convinced Sekai's dating him tries to keep Kotonoha away from Makoto, which includes putting her number in Makoto's blocked list. Makoto questions this effort which gets Sekai to think Makoto's falling back in love with Kotonoha, which worsens when Kotonoha pays a visit to Makoto's apartment. Makoto unblocks her number and makes an empty promise to dance with her after the festival. Sekai, feeling betrayed runs away from his apartment. Sekai is absent from class and Setsuna keeps Makoto away from Kotonoha after class and convinces him to visit Sekai. Despite Sekai's concerns Makoto assures her that he prefers her over Kotonoha. During the festival Makoto and Setsuna are busy working together when she reveals she'll be moving to france soon and then later kisses Makoto while he's sleeping to Kotonoha's shock.
The festival continues the next day and Taisuke goes to fetch more supplies and finds Kotonoha and after he suggests she's no longer Makoto's girlfriend she firmly denies it. Makoto goes on a break and Otome approaches her, who he goes around the festival with. Sekai breaks them up but then Makoto sees he has 20 texts from Kotonoha rushes to see her but Otome catches him and drags him to a break room and has sex with him. Later Makoto dances with Sekai during the bonfire while Taisuke, convinced what he's doing is okay since Kotonoha's no longer Makoto's girlfriend rapes her. Kotonoha, after being raped by Taisuke sees Sekai and Makoto dancing and breaks down crying.
The next morning Setsuna is unconvinced Makoto's broken up with Kotonoha and tells him to end things with Kotonoha. By the evening Makoto goes missing and Setuna finds him having sex with Otome again. Setsuna visits his apartment that night and demands he break up with everyone but Sekai and offers to let him do whatever he wants to her. The next afternoon the girls' basketball team shows their recording of the break room, which reveals to Sekai Makoto's cheated on her with Otoome. Sekai, being devestated by finding out Makoto's been unfaithful and Setsuna's leaving for Paris, starts to miss school. Hikari's also begun to start sleeping with Makoto. The following night Sekai's falls nauseous and throws up and having missed her period concludes she's pregnant. She tells it to Makoto during school but when Makoto refuses to take responsibility screams at him, at which point the news spreads quickly. This turns out to be disastrous for Makoto, as all his (over 3 dozen) girls he's been sleeping with cuts off contact from him, being afraid they might get pregnant too.
Sekai wants to have their child and a life with Makoto and visits his apartment to cook. Makoto, goes out for a walk and is frustrated that nobody will accepts his call and having lost all his sexual partners happens uppon Kotonoha, who after being abandoned by Makoto and raped by Taisuke is thoroughly broken. Makoto breaks down and embraces her in tears, feeling the need to take responsibility, or simply to find another sexual partner. He takes her out to dinner but Sekai calls him to ask about his whereabouts but Makoto angrily snaps at her and accuses her of getting pregnant and tells her to leave his apartment, which she does after thrashing it with the food she made. On her way out however she sees Makoto and Kotonoha together and then returns. Makoto tells her he loves Kotonoha and makes out with her in front of Sekai, who screams and leaves. Things are worsened when Makoto insist she get an abortion.
The next day, arranging to talk at Makoto's apartment she brutally stabs him to death with a kitchen knife and feels. She then gets a text from 'Makoto' that asks her to come to the school rooftop. Sekai comes to find Kotonoha there. Kotonoha shows her Makoto's severed head and then slits open her neck. She then carves open her uterus to confirm her pregnancy and then affirms it was a lie. Early that morning, on a sailbot Kotonoha's seen cuddling Makoto's head whispering now that they can finally be together.
The ending for the anime themes has a series of cell phone pictures of the girls that Makoto meets. This fits with the theme initiated, of someone falling in love with you if nobody discovers you have their picture on your cell phone for three weeks.
This episode is more or less identical to it's visual novel counterpart, with minor differences and arbitrary detail added.
Episode 2 - The Distance Between the Two of ThemEdit
is most similiar to a similiary named visual novel episode. The main difference is Makoto and Kotonoha's date is show and ends badly, rather than ending good. Regardless Sekai gives Makoto movie tickets and things go bad during the movie and the train ride back. Both the anime and visual novel episode, apart from minor differences end the same way with Kotonoha going over to Makoto and kissing him while Sekai watches from a distance
Apart from Makoto coming over to Kotonoha's place to play with Kokoro and them agreeing to address each other by their first names there's no counterpart to this episode. Also these scenarios are impossible in the novel after the previous episode, rather for Makoto to come over to Kotonoha's to play with Kokoro, the route through True Feelings has to be taken.
Altough the details differ Makoto tries to make more sexual advances on Kotonoha and then turns to Sekai for advice. Sekai allows Makoto to train on her by allowing him to fondle and strip her. Later Kotonoha invites Makoto to a pool. This initially follows the episode first experience from the novel but Sekai and Makoto don't go all the way on their training.
While the pool event exists in the novel it always happens after the school festival, not before like in the anime. Another huge difference is Makoto starts sleeping with Sekai by telling him he loves her, instead of simply training.
Taisuke running into Kotonoha is present in the visual novel and Otome seeing the festival with Makoto and then later inviting him to a break room exist. But in the visual novel Makoto never accepts her and either goes back to Kotonoha or Sekai. While Kotonoha getting raped by Taisuke is possible, it doesn't happen while Makoto's seeing the festival with Otome, since Otome arranges the rape.
Since Makoto can't have sex with Otome in the visual novel most of this episode doesn't happen, but the video screening hosted by the girl's basketball team exists, albeit it shows Makoto having sex with Kotonoha rather than Otome, something obviously can't happen with Taisuke raping Kotonoha. The effect is still the same though, Sekai finds out Makoto's been unfaithful. Another thing to note is when Kotonoha gets raped by Taisuke, she starts to date him, having given up on Makoto. Also, when Makoto's having sex with Kotonoha he misses the bonfire, while in the anime he makes it.
This esentially combines the outcomes from the school festival Makoto dancing with Sekai while Kotonoha's raped, Makoto cheating on Sekai and the video is shown to Sekai, and then adding many other details such as Makoto sleeping with Setsuna at his apartment the anime barely resembles the visual novel anymore
Although the previous episode had some major events that happens in the visual novel the repercussions are different, for example when Kotonoha gets raped she starts dating Taisuke instead of still being hung up on Makoto. Also when Sekai finds out he's been cheating he breaks up with her. Also in both cases Setsuna doesn't go to Paris.
While how it happened is entirely different, before the ending resembles To My Children the most, with Sekai being pregnant and Makoto refusing to take responsibility. The main difference however is Sekai chooses to kill Makoto right there, instead of waiting 6 months. This causes Sekai to get killed by Kotonoha and Kotonoha is not pregnant however.
